Cultivation Guide

Gaura lindheimeri ‘Whirling Butterflies’, also known as beeblossom, is a popular perennial known for its airy, butterfly-like white and pink flowers that dance on slender stems. It thrives in well-drained soil and full sun, making it a great addition to cottage gardens, informal borders, and wildflower gardens.

Cultivation:
  • Sunlight:

Gaura ‘Whirling Butterflies’ requires 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily to flourish.

  • Soil:

Well-drained, sandy or loamy soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0-7.0) is ideal.

  • Watering:

Water deeply until established, then moderately, as it is drought-tolerant once established.

  • Fertilizing:

Avoid over-fertilizing, as it can lead to floppy growth. A light application of a balanced slow-release fertilizer in spring is usually sufficient.

  • Maintenance:

Deadhead spent flower spikes to encourage continuous blooming and to prevent unwanted self-seeding.

  • Support:

Taller varieties may require staking or support, especially in rich soils.

  • Overwintering:

Gaura can overwinter well in well-drained soil, but may need protection or container growing in areas with heavy, waterlogged soil or harsh winters.

Planting:
  • Plant in spring or fall, ensuring good drainage.
  • Space plants 70-80cm apart.
  • Consider planting with other drought-tolerant perennials.
Additional Notes:
  • Gaura ‘Whirling Butterflies’ is relatively low-maintenance and deer-resistant.
  • The cultivar is known for its long blooming period, typically from early summer to autumn.
  • Its airy texture makes it a great addition to cottage gardens, mixed borders, and wildflower plantings.
