Agathis australis, commonly known as kauri, is a large, long-lived evergreen conifer native to the northern regions of New Zealand’s North Island. It’s characterized by its massive, columnar trunk, thick, leathery leaves, and large, woody seed cones. Kauri forests are a vital part of New Zealand’s biodiversity, and the tree itself is culturally significant.

Cultivation Guide

  • Climate:

Kauri thrives in warm, moist, and well-drained conditions, ideally with a rainfall between 1100 and 2000mm annually.

  • Soil:

They prefer fertile, well-draining soil but can tolerate a range of soil types, including heavy clay soils when mature.

  • Light:

While young trees need protection from frost and wind, mature trees can tolerate light frosts.

  • Watering:

Water young trees weekly during dry periods, while established trees are more drought-tolerant.

  • Propagation:

Kauri is typically propagated from seeds, which should be planted promptly after collection as they lose viability quickly.

  • Planting:

Autumn planting is recommended for seedlings, and they should be placed in a sheltered area to harden off.

  • Pests and Diseases:
Kauri are susceptible to kauri dieback, a disease caused by a soilborne pathogen. Our Kauri are free of Kauri dieback disease.
