Muehlenbeckia axillaris (Creeping Wire Vine/Pōhuehue) is a hardy, dense, evergreen to semi-deciduous mat-forming shrub native to NZ and Australia. Growing 5-10 cm high with a 1m+ spread, it features wiry, red-brown stems, tiny, glossy, dark green leaves, and white berries in autumn. It thrives in full sun, well-drained soil, and is ideal for rockeries or erosion control.

Payless Plants
  • Habit: A low-growing, mat-forming shrub, sometimes described as a creeping or prostrate shrub, that forms dense, wiry mats of, initially, red-brown stems that turn grey-brown or blackish with age.
  • Leaves: Very small, dark green to bronze-green, orbicular to obovate, generally less than 1cm in diameter, and often deciduous in colder climates.
  • Flowers/Fruit: Inconspicuous, yellowish-white or cream-colored flowers are produced, often in pairs, in the leaf axils during summer. Female plants produce small, fleshy, white berries with a shiny black seed, which are highly attractive to birds and lizards.
  • Roots: The plant roots at the nodes when in contact with the ground.
  • Habitat: Naturally found on river flats, gravelly, and rocky areas, often in harsh conditions, making it highly resilient.

Cultivation Guide

  • Light: Thrives best in full sun to partial shade.
  • Soil: Tolerates a wide range of soil types, including poor or sandy soils, but prefers well-drained, fertile soil.
  • Water: Needs regular watering, particularly during the first two to three years of establishment, but is drought-tolerant once established.
  • Hardiness: Highly hardy, tolerating severe frosts, coastal winds, and dry conditions.
  • Propagation: Easily propagated from seed, cuttings, or division.
  • Pruning: Requires minimal pruning, but can be trimmed in summer to maintain shape or control spread.
  • Uses: Excellent for erosion control on banks, groundcover, rockeries, or for growing over walls.
  • Spacing: For full coverage, plant at 80 cm intervals, which should merge within 2-3 years.
