Cistus ‘Snowmound’ (a form of Cistus salviifolius) is a low-spreading, evergreen shrub renowned for its masses of pure white, crepe-like flowers with golden centers. Growing roughly 50–80 cm tall and up to 100–120 cm wide, it is an ideal, drought-tolerant ground cover for sunny, exposed New Zealand gardens.
‘Snowmound’ is a highly adaptable, sun-loving evergreen shrub aptly named for the stunning, solid ball of white it creates when in full bloom. The plant features small, crinkled, grey-green foliage that is softly felted on the underside. From spring through mid-summer, it produces an abundance of delicate, tissue-paper-like white blooms. It thrives in coastal environments, as its resinous, aromatic leaves are highly resilient to salty sea spray and strong dry winds.
Light: Full sun is essential. Flowering is heavily reduced in the shade.
Soil: Requires poor to moderately fertile, exceptionally well-drained soil. Heavy clay or overly wet soil can lead to root rot.
Water: Highly drought-tolerant once established. Little to no supplementary watering is required except during extended dry periods when first planting.
Hardiness: Frost-hardy and can withstand exposed coastal sites.
Pruning: Responds well to a light trim immediately after the spring/summer flowering season to maintain a dense, compact shape and prevent it from becoming woody.
