$50.00

Developed by the Horticulture Research Institute in Havelock North, New Zealand in 1975, the Pacific Rose apple is primarily grown as a commercial fresh-eating variety. It produces large-to-medium apples with a distinctive long, cylindrical shape and a slight crown. The skin features a faint yellow-green base almost entirely covered by a rich, vivid crimson to rose-pink flush, highlighted by visible tan lenticels. The flesh is creamy white, firm, and fine-grained, boasting a noticeable crunch and a very sweet flavor profile with low acidity.

Cultivation Guide

Climate & Sun: Thrives in temperate, sunny areas with a distinct winter chill. Needs a sheltered position protected from strong winds.

Soil: Requires fertile, well-draining soils. Avoid heavy clay soils where roots may become waterlogged.

Tree Vigor & Size: Moderately vigorous and upright. The ultimate size depends on the rootstock (e.g., dwarf rootstocks like M9 keep the tree around 3m tall, making it highly manageable for courtyard gardens).

Pollination: Pacific Rose trees require cross-pollination to successfully set fruit. Excellent pollination partners include Royal Gala, Fuji, Granny Smith, and Monty’s Surprise.

Fruiting & Harvest: It bears fruit on spurs and produces mid-season to late-season (usually ready to harvest around April in the Southern Hemisphere).

Maintenance: Prune in late winter while the tree is dormant. Remove dead, damaged, or inward-crossing branches to encourage sunlight penetration and airflow.
