The Splendour apple is a late-season New Zealand cultivar known for its exceptionally sweet, honeyed flavor and crisp, juicy texture. Although prized by home gardeners and specialty orchards for fresh eating, it is not grown for large-scale commercial export due to its thin, easily bruised skin.
Developed in Napier, New Zealand, in 1948, the Splendour apple is an attractive, late-ripening variety. The fruit is typically medium to large, ribbed, and conical to blocky in shape. It features a thin, light green background skin overlaid with a bright carmine-red or pink blush. Beneath the skin, the flesh is crisp and creamy-white, offering a distinctively sweet taste with very low acidity. Because the thin skin bruises easily during shipping, it is highly sought after as a backyard or specialty variety that functions as a fabulous winter keeper when stored properly.
Tree Vigor & Habits: Produces a deciduous, upright-spreading tree that grows to about 3m to 4m in height depending on the rootstock. It is a reliable heavy cropper that produces on both tips and spurs.
Sun & Soil: Performs best in full sun within a sheltered position, planted in fertile, well-draining soil.
Pollination: It is not self-fertile and requires a mid-to-late flowering cross-pollinator to produce heavy crops (e.g., Fuji, Royal Gala, Golden Delicious, or Braeburn).
Climate: Highly resistant to fire blight. It thrives in temperate, frost-tolerant climates but is not suited to sub-tropical environments.
Pruning: Train and trim in late winter to maintain an open canopy for sunlight and airflow. Thinning fruit bunches also helps prevent biennial bearing and ensures large fruits each year.
