Cultivation Guide

Azalea Red Wings is a popular evergreen shrub known for its striking, cerise-red, ruffled flowers that bloom in late winter and spring. To cultivate Red Wings successfully, they need well-drained, slightly acidic, humus-rich soil and a sheltered location with partial shade.

Detailed Cultivation Tips:
  • Soil:

Azaleas thrive in moist, well-drained soil with a pH between 4.5 and 6.0. Amend heavy clay soils with peat moss or compost to improve drainage.

  • Position:

Red Wings prefer a sheltered location with partial shade, protecting them from hot, drying winds and strong afternoon sun.

  • Watering:

Water regularly, especially during dry periods, but avoid overwatering, as Azaleas have shallow roots that don’t like to sit in water.

  • Fertilizing:

Use an ericaceous fertilizer (specifically formulated for acid-loving plants) during the growing season. Avoid using lime, as it can stunt or kill Azaleas.

  • Mulching:

Apply a layer of organic mulch around the base of the plant to help retain moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature.

  • Pruning:

Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape and encourage vigorous growth.

  • Disease Prevention:

Azaleas can be susceptible to fungal diseases, so ensure good air circulation and water in the morning to allow leaves to dry before evening.

  • Container Growing:
Red Wings can be grown in containers, but choose a large container to allow for robust growth and provide adequate drainage.
