$8.00

Ceanothus Blue Carpet or Californian Lilac is an evergreen, low growing shrub with small green glossy leaves. In spring it is smothered in rich blue flowers. A great plant for adding a lovely splash of colour to rockeries or for spilling over walls and banks. A good choice for hot and dry conditions.

Cultivation Guide

Cultivation:
  • Sunlight:

Ceanothus Blue Carpet thrives in a sunny location.

  • Soil:

Well-drained soil is essential for this plant. If your soil is clay-based or poorly drained, amend it with gypsum and organic matter.

  • Planting:

Dig a hole twice as wide and to the same depth as the root ball. Gently tease the roots before planting and backfill with soil, firming it down gently.

  • Watering:

Water well after planting and keep the soil moist while the plant establishes. Once established, it can tolerate dry conditions.

  • Feeding:

Feed with a general-purpose fertilizer in spring and again in mid-autumn to encourage flowering.

  • Pruning:

Prune after flowering to maintain its shape and encourage denser growth. This is especially important for groundcover uses.

  • Hardiness:

Ceanothus Blue Carpet is hardy and can tolerate coastal conditions, some wind, and frost once established. It’s also known to tolerate cooler climates.

  • Uses:

It’s a great choice for hot, dry banks, rockeries, and spilling over walls or paths.

  • Companion Plants:
Consider companion plants like lavender or yarrow, which can attract beneficial insects and deter pests.
