Coprosma ‘Lemon and Lime’, also known as Variegated Mirror Bush or Looking-glass plant, is a low-maintenance, compact New Zealand native evergreen shrub with glossy, small leaves that are a vibrant mix of yellow, lime, and green, sometimes flushing orange in winter. It grows to about 1.2-1.5 meters tall and wide, thrives in full sun to partial shade, prefers well-drained soil, and is excellent for hedging, containers, and adding year-round colour due to its hardiness in mild climates and tolerance of coastal conditions and wind.
Foliage: The most striking feature is its glossy, small leaves, which are variegated in shades of lemon yellow, bright lime, and emerald green.
Winter Color: The leaves often develop a vibrant orange or reddish flush during the winter months.
Flowers & Fruit: The flowers are insignificant and occur in spring on separate male and female plants (dioecious). If grown near a male plant, red, edible fruit may appear in the autumn.
Growth Habit: It forms a compact, upright to rounded shrub.
Light:Prefers a full sun position for the best colour, but will tolerate partial shade.
Soil:Thrives in well-drained soils and is suitable for most soil types. Incorporate compost for better results and avoid waterlogged conditions or alkaline soils.
Watering:Water regularly during the first growing season to establish roots. Once mature, it is drought-tolerant but benefits from deep watering during dry periods, especially in containers.
Feeding:An annual dressing of a slow-release fertiliser in spring will enhance the intensity of the foliage colour.
Pruning:Trim regularly in spring or summer to maintain a neat, compact habit, encourage lush new growth, and remove any dead or damaged stems.
Hardiness:It is hardy in mild climates and coastal areas, tolerating wind and light frost. However, it needs protection from severe frosts, especially in colder regions.
Pests & Diseases:Generally pest and disease-free but may occasionally encounter scale insects or aphids.
Applications:Excellent for use as an evergreen hedge, in containers, or as a vibrant plant for borders and general garden colour.
