Griselinia ‘Broadway Mint’ is also known as NZ Broadleaf or Kapuka, a fast-growing, hardy evergreen native to New Zealand, valued for its dense, glossy, mint-green leaves and resilience in coastal and windy conditions. It is an excellent hedging and screening plant, though it will grow into a small tree if left unpruned. To cultivate it, plant in well-drained soil in a sunny to partly shaded spot, watering regularly during the first year and during dry spells once established.
It features broad, leathery, glossy leaves that are a vibrant mint-green, often with a softly wavy edge.
Growth Habit:
This cultivar forms a dense, rounded, and bushy shrub. While it naturally grows as a small tree, it can be easily pruned to maintain a compact hedge or screen shape.
Size:
In around five years, it can reach approximately 3 metres tall and 2 metres wide, though it can become larger if allowed to grow naturally.
Hardiness:
Griselinia ‘Broadway Mint’ is hardy and highly tolerant of coastal conditions, strong winds, and frost.
Watering: Water regularly and slowly to ensure the roots get well established, especially during the first year after planting. Provide supplemental watering during extended dry periods.
Pruning: Minimal pruning is required to maintain its tidy, compact shape. It can be easily trimmed into a formal hedge or allowed to grow more naturally.
Fertilizing: Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring and a mid-summer feed to support healthy growth.
Pest and Disease Control: Watch for aphids and scale insects and treat with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil if found. To prevent root rot, ensure good drainage. Remove affected leaves promptly to control leaf spot.
Uses: It is a versatile plant ideal for creating dense privacy screens, windbreaks, and attractive, low-maintenance hedges.
