- Habit: A low-growing, mat-forming shrub, sometimes described as a creeping or prostrate shrub, that forms dense, wiry mats of, initially, red-brown stems that turn grey-brown or blackish with age.
- Leaves: Very small, dark green to bronze-green, orbicular to obovate, generally less than 1cm in diameter, and often deciduous in colder climates.
- Flowers/Fruit: Inconspicuous, yellowish-white or cream-colored flowers are produced, often in pairs, in the leaf axils during summer. Female plants produce small, fleshy, white berries with a shiny black seed, which are highly attractive to birds and lizards.
- Roots: The plant roots at the nodes when in contact with the ground.
- Habitat: Naturally found on river flats, gravelly, and rocky areas, often in harsh conditions, making it highly resilient.
