Nandina Gulf Stream (Nandina domestica ‘Gulf Stream’) is a popular, compact, evergreen shrub known for its spectacular, fine-textured foliage that transitions through vibrant colors across the seasons. It is a highly versatile, low-maintenance, and hardy plant perfect for borders, containers, or mass planting.

Gulf Stream Nandina is a dense, bushy, dwarf cultivar of the traditional Heavenly Bamboo that typically reaches about 60–100 cm in height and width. Despite its common name, it is a broadleaf shrub (in the Berberidaceae family) rather than a true bamboo.
The plant’s primary appeal is its dynamic, year-round foliage:
Spring: New growth emerges in warm, striking tones of bronze and copper with orange tints.
Summer: The leaves mature to lush, blue-green, though they often retain an orange flush. Small, delicate white flowers bloom in conical panicles, occasionally followed by sparse red berries.
Autumn & Winter: As the weather cools, the foliage turns brilliant shades of fiery orange, gold, and fire-engine red.
Because Gulf Stream produces very few (if any) berries, it is considered a non-invasive, bird-safe alternative to taller, heavily fruiting Nandina species.

Cultivation Guide

Sunlight: Thrives in full sun to partial shade. To achieve the brightest winter foliage color, ensure the plant receives plenty of direct sunlight.

Soil: Prefers fertile, well-draining soil, but is highly adaptable and tolerates clay, loam, and sandy conditions. Incorporating some organic compost at the time of planting is highly recommended.

Watering: Provide regular watering while the plant establishes. Once established, it demonstrates excellent drought tolerance.

Pruning: This variety grows naturally neat and is slow-growing, so it rarely requires structural pruning. A light trim in late winter or early spring can be done to shape the plant or remove damaged branches.

Fertilizing: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to support vibrant foliage.
