Pittosporum tenuifolium ‘Stephens Island’, also known as Kōhūhū, is a dense, evergreen shrub native to New Zealand, specifically Stephens Island in the Cook Strait. It’s characterized by its small, dark green, leathery leaves and compact, rounded form. This variety is known for its hardiness and suitability for coastal conditions and colder climates.

Payless Plants

Pittosporum tenuifolium ‘Stephens Island’ is a versatile shrub, appreciated for its tidy, dense habit and ability to be pruned into various shapes, making it suitable for hedges, screens, and topiary. It features small, oval, dark green leaves with lighter edges and a glossy finish. In spring, it produces small, fragrant, purple flowers that add to its ornamental appeal. It’s a hardy plant, well-suited to coastal conditions and tolerating a range of soil types, though it prefers well-drained soil and regular watering.

It is unclear whether P. Stephens Island is a Pittosporum tenuifolium cultivar or a Pittosporum ralphii cultivar. It is our opinion it is more likely a P. ralphii cultivar.
