This spectacular ornamental tree typically grows to a mature height of 5 m with a width of 3 m. In late winter to early spring, it produces a profusion of bell-shaped, claret-red blossoms on bare branches, offering a vital nectar source that native Tūī birds absolutely love. The spring/summer lush green foliage turns spectacular shades of yellow, gold, and bright orange in the autumn before dropping.

Cultivation Guide

This tree performs best in full sun in free-draining, moderately fertile soil. It is known for good frost tolerance, adapting well to cool climates and coastal/humid environments. Plant in a location protected from harsh winds, as strong gusts can strip the blossoms. Minimal maintenance is required; simply water deeply during dry spells when establishing, and apply a light shaping prune in late spring after flowering concludes.
