Prunus × yedoensis ‘Awanui’ (Awanui Flowering Cherry) is a highly regarded, New Zealand-bred cultivar of the Yoshino cherry. Known for its prolific, soft pink spring blossoms and distinct vase-to-spreading habit, it is an exceptional specimen, shade, or avenue tree.
Appearance: This deciduous tree features an erect, vase-shaped structure when young that develops graceful, layered, horizontal branches reaching outward.
Flowers: In mid-spring, deep pink buds burst into large, fragrant, single shell-pink blossoms that gently transition to white as the season progresses.
Foliage & Form: Bright green, serrated leaves emerge after the blooms. By autumn, the canopy provides strong seasonal interest with warm tones of golden yellow and orange before the leaves fall.
Size: Typically reaches a mature height of 5 to 8 meters and a spread of 4 to 8 meters, usually scaling to about 6m × 5m in its first 10 years.
Position: Thrives in full sun. While hardy, it is highly recommended to plant in a site sheltered from harsh winds to prolong the delicate spring bloom.
Soil: Adapts well to almost all reasonable soil types, but prefers moist, fertile, and well-drained soil. It responds positively to a spring application of mulch and compost to retain moisture.
Care & Maintenance: Requires minimal aftercare once established. Water young trees regularly through their first few seasons and during prolonged dry spells.
Pruning: Responds well to annual pruning to maintain shape and encourage vigorous new growth. To avoid silver leaf fungal infections, pruning is best done in midsummer rather than winter.
Pest & Disease Resistance: Generally hardy and disease-resistant, though it can occasionally be affected by ‘Shot Hole’ (small holes in the leaves). This is mostly a cosmetic issue and can be treated with a winter/spring copper spray.
