Rhodohypoxis baurii ‘Pink’ is a small, clump-forming perennial from South Africa, also known as Red star or Rosy posy. It features grassy, hairy foliage and produces star-shaped pink flowers from late spring through summer. For cultivation, it requires a sunny spot with well-draining soil, regular watering during the growing season, and dry conditions in winter.
Plant type: A low-growing, deciduous, herbaceous perennial that forms clumps.
Height: Grows to about 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) tall.
Foliage: Tufts of grassy, narrow, lance-shaped leaves that are a dull or grey-green and covered in sparse hairs.
Flowers: Star-shaped, with six petals, and can be pink, white, or red. ‘Pink’ varieties can range from pale to deep shades. The flowers are borne on short, slender stems and bloom from late spring to late summer.
Habitat: Native to the rocky slopes and meadows of the Drakensberg region in southern Africa.
Soil: Needs average, gritty, and well-drained soil; it prefers slightly acidic to neutral conditions but can tolerate a range of soils.
Watering: Water regularly during the growing season, but allow the soil to dry out completely when the plant is dormant.
Winter care: Protect plants from wet and cold winter conditions. Potted plants can be stored in a cool, dry place like a garage or shed. In the garden, you can cover outdoor plants with a piece of slate.
Uses: Excellent for rock gardens, containers, and as a low border or groundcover. It pairs well with plants like Sempervivum, Gentiana, and Viola.
