Cultivation Guide
Choisya ‘Aztec Pearl’, also known as Mexican Orange Blossom, is a compact, evergreen shrub that thrives in well-drained soil and full sun to partial shade. It’s known for its fragrant, white, citrus-like flowers that bloom in spring and summer, and its finely divided, glossy green leaves. It’s relatively low-maintenance, drought-tolerant once established, and can withstand light frost.
- Sunlight: Choisya Aztec Pearl prefers full sun to partial shade. In sunnier spots, the flowers will be more abundant, and the foliage will retain a vibrant green color.
- Soil: It’s adaptable to a range of soil types, but well-drained soil is crucial. Avoid planting in overly wet or boggy areas.
- Watering: Once established, Choisya Aztec Pearl is relatively drought-tolerant. Water regularly during the first growing season to help the plant establish a strong root system.
- Fertilizing: A yearly application of a balanced fertilizer in spring can encourage flowering.
- Pruning: Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape and encourage new growth. You can trim stems by 25-30cm after flowering to encourage a second flush of flowers in autumn.
- Hardiness: It is generally hardy to moderate frost, but in colder regions, it may benefit from some winter protection.
- Pests and Diseases: Choisya Aztec Pearl is relatively pest and disease-free.
- Planting: Plant in spring or autumn in well-drained soil.
- Location: Suitable for various garden settings, including mixed borders, coastal gardens, and as a low hedge.
- Propagation: Can be propagated from softwood or semi-ripe cuttings.
