Apricot Trevatt (Synonym: Prunus armeniaca ‘Trevatt’) is a vigorous, self-fertile Australian apricot variety producing large, golden-orange, freestone fruit with firm, aromatic flesh in mid-summer. Grown for fresh eating, drying, and preserving, it thrives in full sun and well-drained soil in a sheltered site, though planting with another variety like ‘Sundrop’ can boost yields.

  • Origin:

Developed in Australia in the early 20th century, it’s a popular and reliable commercial variety known as an “Aussie heirloom”.

  • Fruit:

The fruit is large, sweet, and juicy with a firm texture, making it excellent for eating fresh, bottling, stewing, and especially for dehydrating due to its high aroma and flavour. The skin has a characteristic red tint over a golden-orange background.

  • Tree Habit:

It is a vigorous, upright, deciduous tree that can grow to a height and width of about 4 meters by 3 meters.

  • Self-Fertile:
Trevatt is self-fertile and will produce fruit on its own, but planting a pollinator like the ‘Sundrop’ apricot variety nearby will result in a more bountiful and regular harvest.

Cultivation Guide

    • Planting Site:

Select a sunny, sheltered position to protect the tree from spring frosts and wind.

    • Soil:

      Plant in well-drained soil.

    • Watering:

Water well, especially during dry periods and when the fruit is developing.

    • Pollination:

While self-fertile, to ensure the heaviest crops, plant another apricot variety (such as ‘Sundrop’) nearby.

    • Pruning:

Pruning the tree to a modified central leader or vase shape is recommended.

    • Climate:
It performs well in temperate regions with dry spring weather and requires sufficient winter chilling, though it is also suited to warmer climates.
