The Cherry Tangshe (often spelled “Tangshi”) is an early-fruiting, self-fertile sour/tart cherry variety prized for its pale pink skin, yellow flesh, and low chill-hour requirements. It thrives in both warm, mild-winter regions and cooler climates.
The Cherry Tangshe is a deciduous, multi-branched tree with an upright and rounded growth habit, typically reaching a mature size of about 3 m to 4 m in height and 2 m to 3 m in width. It produces lovely pale pink to white blossoms in the spring, followed by small-to-medium-sized fruits with a red blush over a pale pinkish-yellow skin. The flesh is yellow, juicy, and yields a sharp, rich flavor. Because of its tartness, it is highly sought after for both fresh eating and culinary uses, such as baking, cooking, and preserves.
Climate & Chill Hours: It features a very low chill requirement, making it an excellent option for areas with milder winters as well as cold-winter regions. It is frost-hardy when dormant but may need spring frost protection for its early blossoms.
Site Selection: Plant in full sun (at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily) in a sheltered spot protected from strong winds and late spring frosts.
Soil: Prefers deep, free-draining soil rich in organic matter, lime, and potash. Avoid heavy, waterlogged soils to prevent root rot.
Pollination: It is self-fertile, meaning it produces fruit without needing a cross-pollination partner.
Harvesting: It ripens exceptionally early, often in late spring or very early summer (around November to December depending on the hemisphere and exact location).
Watering & Feeding: Water well during prolonged dry spells and fruit development. Apply a low-nitrogen, all-purpose fertilizer (like compost or pelletized chicken manure) in the spring.
