This native grass is naturally found on cliffs and rock faces, and in herbfields, boggy meadows, and scrub. It’s also common on limestone outcrops.

  • Growing Conditions:

Chionochloa flavicans prefers well-drained soil and can tolerate full sun to partial shade. It’s also notably drought-tolerant and can withstand windy coastal conditions.

Cultivation Guide

Chionochloa flavicans, commonly known as miniature toetoe, is a popular and versatile New Zealand native grass that is relatively easy to cultivate. It thrives in well-drained soil and full sun to partial shade, tolerating a range of conditions including frost and drought. Propagation is straightforward through fresh seed or division of established plants.

Cultivation Details:
  • Sunlight: Prefers full sun to partial shade.
  • Soil: Well-drained soil is essential. It can tolerate a range of soil types, including clay, but good drainage is crucial.
  • Watering: Drought-tolerant once established, but regular watering during dry spells is beneficial.
  • Fertilizing: Not heavy feeders; use a native plant fertilizer after planting and for established plants.
  • Planting: Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball, ensuring the crown is level with the soil surface, according to Greg.app.
  • Maintenance: Remove dead or damaged leaves to maintain tidy appearance.
  • Uses: Popular in landscaping, rockeries, and for erosion control.
Key Considerations:
  • Drainage: Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot, especially in heavier clay soils.
  • Fertilizer: Avoid over-fertilizing; native plant fertilizer is usually sufficient.
  • Pest and Diseases: While generally robust, be aware of potential issues and address them promptly.
Chionochloa flavicans is a valuable addition to gardens, offering attractive foliage and feathery flower plumes while requiring minimal maintenance once established.
